Fossil insects have been used to reconstruct past climates for several decades. BugsCEP incorporates an implementation of the MCR (Mutual Climate Range) Method for reconstructing summer and winter temperatures as indicated by the species found in a sample.

BugsCEP also provides a simple prediction function, which allows the user to ask which species could theoretically survive within given temperature values.
